Wotja History

From a double BAFTA award-winning development team, Wotja V19 is the continued evolution of the legendary 'SSEYO Koan Generative Music System', Noatikl, Mixtikl, Liptikl & Tiklbox. It uses a combination of AI Techniques & heuristics we’ve been crafting for nearly 30 years and is going from strength to strength.

Background: Generative Music is a term coined in 1995 by Brian Eno whilst working with SSEYO Koan Pro.

All our free Wotja apps are full-save apps which operate by default with a 'Free Mode' Feature Set. These apps are are all AD-FREE, too.

Use in 'Free Mode' does NOT require a Subscription or payment of any kind and it really does let you use a full-save Wotja for free, albeit with some limitations.

The main limitations in the 'Free Mode' Feature Set are as follows: mix editing in track 1 only, MIDI Out/In on channel 1 only, an auto-timeout of 10 minutes and use of any recordings you make for personal non-commercial use only.

Wotja is a DEEP app and Free Mode really is POWERFUL.

In Free Mode you can create/edit/save/export mixes and you might well have a 'euraka' moment when you realise that entire pieces of complex, rich generative music can be created in just one cell (examples of such mixes are in the Built-in 'Calm' and 'Relax' Albums).

10 minutes is plenty of time to create/play/experiment with mix files and to enjoy Flow mode, Boxes and Albums for free. If you want to restart then simply tap the play button for another 10 minutes - it is as easy as that!

P.S. Did you know you can also use cut-up text techniques in Wotja to create ideas for lyrics, creating writing etc.?

Are we crazy in allowing so much for free?

Our 2 main goals for Wotja are for it to be widely used as a creativity tool/relaxation aid and for it to have an active community of users.

To use it you just need it installed on a suitable mobile device, tablet, computer/laptop or TV. You can then generate live music with it on that device - no streaming is needed.

We fully understand that there are users that either cannot afford to pay for apps, won't pay to use apps or simply just wish to try apps out for free. We have created Free Mode for them.

Free Mode has now evolved to be so powerful that, if you choose to, you can realistically use Wotja for free (especially important for our Google Play version), be that as a creativity tool or as a relaxation aid. You can even share the mixes you make for others to play for free in Wotja (in Free Mode!).

Wotja continues to go from strength to strength. If you are interested in creating or listening to generative music then because of the power of 'Free Mode' the decision to get Wotja should end up being one of the easiest you will ever make :).

So, it may well be that we are crazy, but our hope is that enough users (creators or listeners) may decide at some point in their use of Wotja that they would like to use it without the 'Free Mode' limitations. At that time they can then get an easy-to-cancel In-App Subscription (where available) or a Paid-for version (see our download page for links).

What can I do in 'Free Mode'?

• Create/save automatic mixes or manual mixes.
• Play mixes for up to 10 minutes (tap play to restart).
• Edit all Cells in Track 1 of a mix and save/export mixes.
• Generate and export cut-up text
• Play Flow mode for up to 10 minutes where mix durations are governed by the Settings > Albums/Flow > Mix Durations parameter.
• Play any .wotjabox 'Box' album for up to 10 minutes.
• Create/save automatic 'Box' albums of generative music mixes (each mix is of 30 second duration; editing/saving of Boxes is not supported).
• Use MIDI Out/In on Channel 1
• Make audio mixdown recordings of up to 30 seconds or record the output of Wotja (on iOS using Inter-App Audio or Audiobus and a suitable audio/MIDI recording app or on other devices using any app that can record system audio/MIDI) noting that any such recordings may be used for Personal / Non-Commercial Use only
• Explore generative music composition and sound design:
  • Use the Intemorphic Music Engine (IME) editors to try out all sorts of generative techniques and end up with something totally custom; start with the generative settings in the available templates if you want.
  • Use the Intermorphic Sound Engine (ISE) editors to create totally custom modular synth/fx sound networks, including using your own SoundFonts; start with the sounds in the available templates if you want.

The benefits of 'Free Mode' for Creators

• For free, use what you create, save & record for Personal / Non-Commercial Use only (please do respect the terms in our EULA and Terms of Service)
• If you have an interest in Generative Music and you are someone who chooses only to use Freeware and/or if you are an Educator or in Education, then Wotja 'Free Mode' means you can explore and work with such things for free. As Wotja is a system that is undergoing continuous development, including being ported to other OS, it should be an app you might well wish to consider using!
• When you find you want to do more than you can in Free Mode, then there are low cost Subscription options and/or Paid-for versions you can purchase.
