Mixtikl; add on Paks; inline editing of Noatikl and Partikl “parts”

We were recently asked a couple of sensible questions about 1) how to create add on Paks for Mixtikl for iPhone, and 2) whether Mixtikl for iPhone would ever support or include Noatikl or Partikl editors.

1) Creating add on Paks of content for Mixtikl for iPhone (or any Mixtikl version).
Add on content Paks are just collections of content files that have been zipped with certain path information, and in some cases various supplementary files e.g. text-based meta files to let Mixtikl know what tempo and pitch the loops are at for when you mix them into a mix at a different pitch and tempo.

The only things you need for creating add on Paks is a utility to create zip files, the content you want to use in Mixtikl, and a text editor if you want to create meta files. Creating Paks is therefore best done on a desktop computer, as that is where you are likely to have all the source content files you will be wanting to use, and where you will create your meta files (as required).

For most people, if you already have some suitably licenced audio or MIDI loops, then you are in business right away!

For those who want to create and use your own Partikl or Noatikl files, then you will need to use our desktop editors (more on that below).


2) Will Mixtikl for iPhone (or other mobile versions) ever support or include Noatikl or Partikl editors?

We develop and price tools according to their function, application and platform: we have a “toolchain” approach.

All versions of Mixtikl include both Partikl and Noatikl runtime engines, this is so that Partikl and Noatikl content can play in any version of Mixtikl.

Yes, Mixtikl can play and (to a degree) sequence audio loops and generative content (templates we call “parts”), but when it comes to the generative content, the runtime engines create the music live from the rules and settings in the parts that the user has chosen to add to the mix, so Mixtikl is not just a simple file player. It is a music generator! That said, we know that you cannot currently customise the parts, but more on that later.

All versions of Mixtikl include the Partikl FX Editor (a subset of the full Partikl Editor) so that you can create and edit FX, the settings of which are stored as vector audio in mix files. But, only the Desktop version includes the full (and complex) Partikl Editor, and this is the tool you would use to create new Partikl files (which can be converted to vector audio, but which can also be very big).

Partikl files comprise MIDI based/or MIDI generating source content e.g. MIDI or Noatikl files to which sound sources are then designed and/or assigned to. They can also include Ogg files that are wrapped into a virtual wavetable. Once the content is “wrapped” by Partikl, it is saved to a Partikl (binary) file for use in Mixtikl.

This whole Partikl file creation process is quite complex and so, to us, it does not make sense to expose this capability in the Mixtikl mobile versions (which would then need to be in ALL mobile versions, including keyboard only controlled ones). Besides, if we did include it, we would have to increase the price of Mixtikl mobile because it would also cannibalise our desktop toolchain. Mixtikl is $2.99 for iPhone/iPod touch, and Mixtikl for desktop is currently a very reasonable $19.99 (and includes standalone, browser plugin and VST/AU plugins) .

So, coming back to the issue of customising parts, we do understand that this is important. What we want to add to Mixtikl Mobile is, therefore, the ability for you to CUSTOMISE various Partikl settings in the parts. We call this “Inline Editing”. When we have included this, you will be able to change the sound settings of a “part”, perhaps one of the tone generators, and hear the change live, and then save that change (as vector audio) to the mix file. However, you will still not be creating/saving a new Partikl file. If you want to do that, you will need to use the Mixtikl desktop version.

The benefit of this “Partikl file customisation” approach, is that you do not have to understand how to create a Partikl file from scratch (i.e. sourcing and binding in the content), but you can adjust the sounds and hear that in a mix. Additionally, as no new Partikl files are created, the result is all vector audio and so mixes remain totally portable.

There is a similar, but slightly different rationale for how we want to handle the relationship between Noatikl (the desktop editor), Noatikl files and Mixtikl. As mentioned, there is a Noatikl runtime engine in Mixtikl. The Noatikl tool chain is well established, and there are many, many parameters in Noatikl that just do not make sense to access in a mobile product. Therefore, similar to the Partikl Editor above, we plan to keep Noatikl file creation to the Noatikl desktop toolchain.

However, similar to the approach for Partikl, we want to allow “inline editing” of some of the Noatikl parameters that are in a Noatikl file that is being used in a mix. It is a bit complicated, as the Noatikl file can also have been wrapped as a Partikl file (as Noatikl is a MIDI note/event generator, and so needs to play through a sound source such as Partikl). But, we figure it should be possible to allow access to changing the values of some key rules and parameters, including even note patterns/riffs. This would mean “live” customisation of Noatikl parameters in a mix with the changes being saved as vector audio in the mix file.

As some people have already noted, Mixtikl can be a bit daunting to get your head around (to start with at least – and we are working on docs etc. to try to help there). And, adding these inline editing capabilities is not going to help in that department :) . BUT, the benefit is that people should be able to have a lot more fun with Mixtikl, and take it “off piste” in ways that will be challenging, personal, unique and exhilarating.

We do not know how long it is going to take us to add the inline editing capabilities, and there are also technical challenges surrounding that, but we do know it is important for people that we do it. So, please be patient with us and bear with us!

Mixtikl 2 Example Generative Music Recordings on Last.fm

We have today uploaded some more recordings of Mixtikl 2 running on an iPod touch. The recordings can be accessed (streamed or downloaded) from the relevant Intermorphic Last.fm webpage http://www.last.fm/music.

There is now also one example of the use of microphone recordings in a mix, where those were made within Mixtikl using an Apple headset mic.

We forgot to mention earlier that the Intermorphic website styling is now refreshed and ready for the launch of Mixtikl 2 on 8th December! We will upload Mixtikl 2 related webpages then, too.

Mixtikl 12 track music and generative music mixer coming to iPhone / iPod touch

Intermorphic is, at last, a registered iPhone / iPod touch developer. :)

We already have Mixtikl running on iPhone, and it seems to perform well. It will be a while before we are ready to launch it, but it does now seem like Mixtikl will make it to iPhone / iPod touch (all things being equal!).

With 12 tracks for the mixing of audio (Ogg/WAV) and MIDI with a range of customisable FX, and including a runtime Noatikl generative engine and the Partikl DLS and modular synth/sound generator, it should be a lot of fun to use and play with.

Back to Noatikl!

Now that the first release of Mixtikl has settled-down nicely (with an iPhone port hopefully pending, subject to feedback from Apple), we’re starting to look again at Noatikl.

The first thing to sort-out is to make it easier to use templates, and we’ve just updated Noatikl to version 1.5.0.15 to deal with that. It is now really, really easy to merge Noatikl pieces and templates together.

The next thing we’ll be looking at is some big stuff for Noatikl 2: mainly the generative pattern editor, which is a big chunk of work, and is something that is going to take a lot of focus from us over the coming months. We might also spend some time looking at easy-to-use interfaces for the Noatikl engine for mobile. Whatever we do, we’re planning on having some real fun with our generative music engine!

Mixtikl Beta – now ready!

Hi all,

Its been a huge amount of work, but we’re now ready to release Mixtikl Beta for Mac/Windows and Windows Mobile Smartphone / Pocket PC (2005/2006). Beta testers will get the build within the next 48 hours or so. This is going to be a very short Beta; technically, it is a release candidate to iron-out any last-minute glitches in the software or the Tiklpaks. So, the full Mixtikl release is only a week or so away!

Mixtikl Beta (and Alpha!) – and some background

It is always something of a relief to hit major project milestones. We have already passed a major one: Mixtikl is midway through its Alpha testing phase and now has people other than Tim and me using it! The Beta release is now only weeks away.

What is Mixtikl, and why are we so excited by it?

Mixtikl is the first mobile music creativity app that does not ignore the importance of the ‘full-on’ desktop music sequencer. Mixtikl embraces it: with both plug-in and standalone versions. Mixtikl is for both PC (Windows and Mac) & Mobile!

  • Mixtikl is open: Use your own content, or from in add-on Tiklpaks.
  • Capture / mix / work on content on the move on your mobile.
  • Finesse your mixes on PC using the Mixtikl plugin.
  • Move your mixes between mobile and PC and back again.
  • ‘Performer’ app – Perform music on your mobile.
  • ‘Remixer’ app – Create quick mixes, and mix and match sounds.
  • ‘Partikl’ app – Sound and FX design, exporting mix files
  • ‘Player’ app – Play lists of Ogg, MIDI and generative music.
  • Use audio loops, MIDI, generative music & modular synthesis.
  • Integrated Noatikl generative music engine for generative music.
  • Pitch shift your loops and apply realtime FX.
  • Act as VST or AU plugin in your VST/AU enabled sequencer.

There is also a whole lot of other stuff in there that we’ll let you all know about when we release it!

What is Noatikl, and why is it in Mixtikl ?

For those who don’t know, Noatikl is a Generative Music tool. This is an easy-to-use program (with great depth!) which helps you make music; by composing the music for you, in real time, while you give it direction in what to do!

Mixtikl contains a run-time version of Noatikl . That is to say, it Mixtikl lets you play your Noatikl compositions on whatever device you happen to have Mixtikl . You can use Mixtikl ’s built-in synth designer (called Partikl) to attach sounds to your Noatikl compositions, to really bring them to life in a cross-platform way.

This lets you, for example, create playlists of Noatikl Generative Music pieces that you or your friends can listen to on the train, where the music changes every time you hear it; as a change from listening to the exact same notes in your MP3 collection time-after-time!

Releasing software is hard work!

It never ceases to amaze me exactly how much work is required to get software out of the door. We’ve been creating products since the early 1990s, so we’ve got a feel for how long things will take now and what order things need to be done in.

Our prediction “way back” when we started creating Mixtikl out of the ashes of miniMIXA has actually been pretty good; we figured it’d be out sometime this month (October) but it now looks like it’ll be November. As always, the delays are due mainly to discovering new things along the way, and adding them in to make the product more interesting! :)

The software is now pretty much in a Beta state, give or take a few items. We’ll let it out of the door when it feels ready!

Looking back, to look forward

It is interesting to reflect that we actually created the first version of miniMIXA back in 2004; and that we won a BAFTA award for miniMIXA back in 2005 – more than three years ago! If our then employers (Tao) had had the vision and resources to back miniMIXA, I wonder where we’d have got the product by now… Still, we’re making up for lost time and are having a blast bringing Mixtikl to life.

It feels amazing to sit on a train and sculpt music in real-time on my mobile. And, when I want, just kick-back and listen to a generative music playlist courtesy of the built-in Noatikl Generative Music engine. And I still can’t quite believe it when I use the exact same software as an Audio Unit under Logic, a VSTi under Kore 2 or Sonar … or even standalone on my Mac/Desktop.

This is been such a long road; we started writing the code that is within the Intermorphic Sound System, which underpins Mixtikl , more than 6 years ago. We started writing the 2d engine that the Mixtikl UI sits on, well over a year ago. minMIXA itself took around 3 years to write, including three major releases. The port from miniMIXA to Mixtikl has been a long, hard slog through 2008, but it is great to be so close now to releasing the product that reaches our vision from nearly a decade ago!

And that product is an extendable, trans-platform music/media mixer and “box of tricks”. And it includes a runtime of the Noatikl Generative Music engine. The first Mixtikl versions are for Windows (Standalone, VSTi), Mac (Standalone, Audio Unit, VSTi), Windows Mobile Pocket PC/Smartphone (Standalone). Once those are finally released, Symbian Series 60 looks to be our next target. And hopefully iPhone after that, if Apple ever solve the problems with their SDK.

We have lots and lots of ideas of ways to extend Mixtikl – and the prices are going to be amazing. I can’t wait for the first full release … not long now!

Mixtikl for iPhone / iPod touch – Intermorphic postpones development for now

We are really sorry to report this, as we really wanted to get the Mixtikl mobile music creativity system running on iPhone / iPod touch (see Create Digital Music).

There is no intrinsic reason why Mixtikl and its integrated Noatikl generative music engine and Partikl DLS MIDI synth, softsynth, sampler and fx network shouldn’t run very nicely on the iPhone / iPod touch. But, as with porting to any Device/OS, there are many issues to consider ranging from technical to commercial, and Pete’s blog touches on some of the technical issues behind our decision.

After further investigation, however, it turns out that it was not only the technical side that turned out to be a show stopper for us. It was the terms in the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement (and as a European developer it took nearly 3 months for us to reach a stage where we got to see them).

Because of NDA restrictions we are not allowed to talk about anything in that long agreement. There was one particular clause that, for us, was a total show stopper (and goodness knows why Apple have that requirement) and another that, depending on interpretation, would also be a total showstopper for us. There were plenty more to really think really hard about, too along the lines of risk vs reward vs control vs who benefits etc.

We were (and still are) very excited by the potential of our software running on these Apple devices, and we love Apple products and all our other software products run on Mac OS X (and Windows XP of course).

So, we have decided not to press ahead with development until Apple can:
- relax a number of (as we see it) overly restrictive terms in the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement
- allow apps to share/exchange data/files between themselves and an attached PC/Mac

Will Apple care that a small developer like us chooses to stay away from the party for now? Surely not!

Will Apple change anything and open things up more because we can’t contine? Surely not, cos there will be plenty of other developers that will develop for it!

Will anyone notice our apps are not available on iPhone, and will anyone care? Some people may notice and care, yes, because we know we create products for a niche audience; however, those people may now need to find other devices to use them on (sorry folks!).

Finally, is this sour grapes on our part? Most definitely not, we still hope to come back to it some time in the future.

So, now that the road ahead is clear for the present at least, we will be turning our attention to Mixtikl for S60 after we complete our work on Mixtikl for Windows Mobile.

noatikl 1.5

Well, that was hard work, but we’ve now got noatikl 1.5 out of the door.

This is a major new development for us, as it completes an arc of development that has been going on for many months now, and has increased the power of noaitkl greatly. The plan was threefold:
- give noatikl pieces the ability to incorporate internally generated structure
- give noatikl the ability to respond to MIDI input events
- introduce a fast, flexible, easy-to-use scripting system to bind it all together!

So: on one hand, we’ve added the ability to control noatikl from within, with (optional!) Lua trigger scripts that fire while the piece is playing. The effect on noatikl is quite incredible. It is especially gratifying to see users who are self-confessed ’scriptaholics’ test-driving the new features, and finding that it totally transforms their ability to control noatikl in the way they want.

On the other hand, noatikl can now be controlled in real-time in response to incoming MIDI controller events. Not only that, but noatikl automatically harmonises with incoming MIDI note events; and those note events can be used to trigger various responses within noatikl using the scripting engine. noatikl can now fairly be described as a hyperinstrument!

What next? Well, for starters we have plans to greatly improve the pattern handling within noatikl. That should keep us busy. :)
