Mixtikl 2.0.1.4 update for iPhone iPod touch submitted to Apple iTunes; Win Mac WiMo to follow

We have just submitted our first Mixtikl update to Apple… In the next day or two we will be uploading the Mixtikl 2.0.1.4 updates to the Intermorphic website. These will be for the Windows, Mac and Windows Mobile versions. When available, you will be able to download them from here: Mixtikl downloads.

Following that, we are going to start exposing more of the power of the “under-the-hood” integrated Noatikl and Partikl engines. That may take some time to do, but it should make for a lot of fun :) .

Purchased Mixtikl 2 for iPhone or iPod touch from iTunes? How did we do? Good, bad?

Thank you very much if you have purchased Mixtikl 2 from iTunes, and we hope you enjoy it. We have built Mixtikl for you, and we really do want to make it as good as we can for you and to make it the most powerful Generative Music system for iPhone / iPod touch.

We do appreciate that it is a complex product, which is partly due to its history (work started on its precursor in 2004) but also because there is a lot of power under the hood – even it much of it is not yet exposed. We really are working hard to make it easier to use, and also to extend it. If you have got stuck, please do check our our Mixtikl 2 video tutorials.

Our first bug fix update should be released to Apple next week. This fixes an issue with file transfers from Windows XP, and allows it to play through the main speaker on iPhone.

This will then be followed by a usability update a few weeks from that.

Following that, we will be improving mix customisation and interaction with the system. Amongst other things, we are hoping to allow live manipulation of Noatikl rules and Partikl synth sounds in due course (but it might be as while as we have a lot of work to do there) – which should be a ton of fun.

That said, we have already spent a long, long, long, long time working on Mixtikl. We know it is not perfect (no software is), but it is a labour of love for us. With a launch price of $2.99 we hope it represents good value!

Rating and Review
If you like Mixtikl 2, please do give it a nice rating on iTunes, preferably with a review to go with it! We need our friends to support us here, as it is all so easy to put up a 1 star rating with no comment. We know it takes time to write a review, so we appreciate each and every one!

If you don’t like Mixtikl 2 for any reason, please(!) do not just post a negative iTunes rating without a comment. That does not help us improve the product you purchased. If you must post a negative rating, please do also say why that is so we can try to address the issues and improve the product for you. Better still, before you do that (if you must), please do contact us about your problem, or even post to the Mixtikl forum. Hopefully we can answer it for you.

We are just 2 guys who have been working tirelessly in this field for nearly 20 years. We simply want to build products that people cherish, and that can deliver real value to them. That has been our mantra all this time, and we cannot see that changing any time soon! The more detailed feedback we get, the better we can do that.

Mixtikl; add on Paks; inline editing of Noatikl and Partikl “parts”

We were recently asked a couple of sensible questions about 1) how to create add on Paks for Mixtikl for iPhone, and 2) whether Mixtikl for iPhone would ever support or include Noatikl or Partikl editors.

1) Creating add on Paks of content for Mixtikl for iPhone (or any Mixtikl version).
Add on content Paks are just collections of content files that have been zipped with certain path information, and in some cases various supplementary files e.g. text-based meta files to let Mixtikl know what tempo and pitch the loops are at for when you mix them into a mix at a different pitch and tempo.

The only things you need for creating add on Paks is a utility to create zip files, the content you want to use in Mixtikl, and a text editor if you want to create meta files. Creating Paks is therefore best done on a desktop computer, as that is where you are likely to have all the source content files you will be wanting to use, and where you will create your meta files (as required).

For most people, if you already have some suitably licenced audio or MIDI loops, then you are in business right away!

For those who want to create and use your own Partikl or Noatikl files, then you will need to use our desktop editors (more on that below).


2) Will Mixtikl for iPhone (or other mobile versions) ever support or include Noatikl or Partikl editors?

We develop and price tools according to their function, application and platform: we have a “toolchain” approach.

All versions of Mixtikl include both Partikl and Noatikl runtime engines, this is so that Partikl and Noatikl content can play in any version of Mixtikl.

Yes, Mixtikl can play and (to a degree) sequence audio loops and generative content (templates we call “parts”), but when it comes to the generative content, the runtime engines create the music live from the rules and settings in the parts that the user has chosen to add to the mix, so Mixtikl is not just a simple file player. It is a music generator! That said, we know that you cannot currently customise the parts, but more on that later.

All versions of Mixtikl include the Partikl FX Editor (a subset of the full Partikl Editor) so that you can create and edit FX, the settings of which are stored as vector audio in mix files. But, only the Desktop version includes the full (and complex) Partikl Editor, and this is the tool you would use to create new Partikl files (which can be converted to vector audio, but which can also be very big).

Partikl files comprise MIDI based/or MIDI generating source content e.g. MIDI or Noatikl files to which sound sources are then designed and/or assigned to. They can also include Ogg files that are wrapped into a virtual wavetable. Once the content is “wrapped” by Partikl, it is saved to a Partikl (binary) file for use in Mixtikl.

This whole Partikl file creation process is quite complex and so, to us, it does not make sense to expose this capability in the Mixtikl mobile versions (which would then need to be in ALL mobile versions, including keyboard only controlled ones). Besides, if we did include it, we would have to increase the price of Mixtikl mobile because it would also cannibalise our desktop toolchain. Mixtikl is $2.99 for iPhone/iPod touch, and Mixtikl for desktop is currently a very reasonable $19.99 (and includes standalone, browser plugin and VST/AU plugins) .

So, coming back to the issue of customising parts, we do understand that this is important. What we want to add to Mixtikl Mobile is, therefore, the ability for you to CUSTOMISE various Partikl settings in the parts. We call this “Inline Editing”. When we have included this, you will be able to change the sound settings of a “part”, perhaps one of the tone generators, and hear the change live, and then save that change (as vector audio) to the mix file. However, you will still not be creating/saving a new Partikl file. If you want to do that, you will need to use the Mixtikl desktop version.

The benefit of this “Partikl file customisation” approach, is that you do not have to understand how to create a Partikl file from scratch (i.e. sourcing and binding in the content), but you can adjust the sounds and hear that in a mix. Additionally, as no new Partikl files are created, the result is all vector audio and so mixes remain totally portable.

There is a similar, but slightly different rationale for how we want to handle the relationship between Noatikl (the desktop editor), Noatikl files and Mixtikl. As mentioned, there is a Noatikl runtime engine in Mixtikl. The Noatikl tool chain is well established, and there are many, many parameters in Noatikl that just do not make sense to access in a mobile product. Therefore, similar to the Partikl Editor above, we plan to keep Noatikl file creation to the Noatikl desktop toolchain.

However, similar to the approach for Partikl, we want to allow “inline editing” of some of the Noatikl parameters that are in a Noatikl file that is being used in a mix. It is a bit complicated, as the Noatikl file can also have been wrapped as a Partikl file (as Noatikl is a MIDI note/event generator, and so needs to play through a sound source such as Partikl). But, we figure it should be possible to allow access to changing the values of some key rules and parameters, including even note patterns/riffs. This would mean “live” customisation of Noatikl parameters in a mix with the changes being saved as vector audio in the mix file.

As some people have already noted, Mixtikl can be a bit daunting to get your head around (to start with at least – and we are working on docs etc. to try to help there). And, adding these inline editing capabilities is not going to help in that department :) . BUT, the benefit is that people should be able to have a lot more fun with Mixtikl, and take it “off piste” in ways that will be challenging, personal, unique and exhilarating.

We do not know how long it is going to take us to add the inline editing capabilities, and there are also technical challenges surrounding that, but we do know it is important for people that we do it. So, please be patient with us and bear with us!

Readying Mixtikl 2.0.1.0 – Generative Music Mixer

The 2.0.1.0 release improves Mixtikl useability in a number of areas through some focused UI tweaking. More significantly, though, it incorporates a new Randomise feature for when you create a new mix.

The “New Random” feature makes it really easy to hit a button and get something new and different when you create a new mix. It draws upon all the installed content, and also randomises track vol and pan, as well as mix root note and tempo. In trying this out we have come up with some really cool mixes that would have taken us quite a while to put together. The only thing it does not randomise is FX, but they are best being added as and where you want them!

Mixtikl 2 Release Candidate 1 (RC1) now baked

Mixtikl 2 RC1 is now built, and will be undergoing testing during the week. We are really looking forward to releasing this on 8th December!

What will be released on 8th December are the Windows and Mac OS X desktop versions, and versions for Windows Mobile Smartphone and Pocket PC.

We will be submitting Mixtikl 2 for iPhone / iPod touch to Apple then (or the day or so before). We know, however, that Apple approval takes some time and it is the Xmas season coming up…. So, it is our expectation that the iPhone / iPod touch version won’t be in the iTunes store until after Xmas…. :( . We are sorry about that, but whilst approval is pending at least you will be able to play with it on your Mac or Windows PC in the interim, to get a feel for it – and there is plenty of fun and experimentation to be enjoyed there. You will be able to make mixes you can move to your iPhone later, and you can try out posting mixes you make with it. You will also be able to check out our surprise feature and have a bit of fun with that, too!

Mixtikl 2 launch date

Mixtikl 2 will be launched on December 8th.

At launch there will be versions for:
- Windows and Mac OS X (standalone, browser plugin, VST plugin variants)
- Windows Mobile (Smartphone and Pocket PC)
- iPhone/iPod touch (submitted to, but awaiting approval from Apple).

It has taken us just a wee bit longer (ahem!) than we had hoped. This is because it is a complex beast and, as is our wont, we have been adding things to it and refining it. We will be doing a website refresh in the next few days and will post some Mixtikl 2 screenshots then. We will also then upload some recordings of mixes made with it.

Update on Mixtikl mobile music mixing software system for iPhone, iPod touch

It may seem that we are a bit quieter than normal, but it is just because we have our noses to the grindstone with porting Mixtikl to iPhone. Mixtikl has turned out to have been a huge project for us, and we are so very much looking forward to getting this upcoming rev done and out.

We are continuing to make good progress, but there is still a lot to do before we are ready to release what we are calling Mixtikl V1.5. This will not only have a much nicer, cleaner and easier to use UI, but will also include some significant changes under the hood.

Once Mixtikl V1.5 is out, we will have a portable 12 track music mixing software system that includes the Noatikl generative music engine and the Partikl Synth/MIDI/FX sound engine, and that runs on iPhone/iPod touch, Windows Mobile Smartphone & Pocket PC / PDA, Windows XP/Vista and Mac OSX (and in due course we also hope to get it running, too, on the Antix Game Player). Phew!

We can then also get back to working on Noatikl 2, which we are so looking forward to doing!

vector audio comes of age – twitter – cdm – koan – parametric sound and fx

We noted with interest the post at CDM referring to what we, back in 2000, coined “vector audio” – see: Create Digital Music.

It is actually with great happiness that we saw this, and it is thanks to Twitter that it has really come into its own. Back then we had build into Koan what we called “vector audio”, namely the ability (synth) sounds and FX to be described in (XML) text format for the purposes of being sent on/shared by SMS (that was the vision, anyhow). Yes, it was just tokenised parameter values for the various FX/Synth settings, but the idea was that these values could be sent/shared in as little as 1 SMS. Admittedly, our aim was to have the Koan Interactive Audio System embedded on mobiles devices, or used as a plugin in webpages, and we did not forsee Twitter :) . We think it is fantastic that Twitter has provided a viable outlet for this kind of technique. One day we might be able to resurrect this approach in Mixtikl! But, we still have a lot to do before then.

Mixtikl 12 track music and generative music mixer coming to iPhone / iPod touch

Intermorphic is, at last, a registered iPhone / iPod touch developer. :)

We already have Mixtikl running on iPhone, and it seems to perform well. It will be a while before we are ready to launch it, but it does now seem like Mixtikl will make it to iPhone / iPod touch (all things being equal!).

With 12 tracks for the mixing of audio (Ogg/WAV) and MIDI with a range of customisable FX, and including a runtime Noatikl generative engine and the Partikl DLS and modular synth/sound generator, it should be a lot of fun to use and play with.

Telegraph article about girl band replacing musical instruments with iPhones

I was interested to read the Telegraph article today (see here) in which they talked up the iPhone as a new musical instrument. Whatever you make of the music in the video clip they link to, this ‘development’ has been a long time coming, and something I have been predicting for years (since SSEYO got into mobile music making apps and tech in 2000).

Even before SSEYO was acquired by Tao in 2002, SSEYO was already developing interactive audio frameworks and technology for Tao intent. Tao intent was a virtual processor, and we (the SSEYO, and now Intermorphic, founders) created the intent Sound System (now owned by Intermorphic!) to be a programmable, and versatile framework for application developers.

Our vision for many years was that the phone was going to be the next electric guitar (well, a musical instrument in the general case!). In 2003 we created a paper for Tao about the ‘Musikfone’, and this was sent to a number of handset manufacturers and operators (and various presentations were made, too). We were hoping they would listen, see what was coming, and decide to deploy Tao intent and let developers create rich, interactive music (and other) apps for those mobile devices. You can guess what happened; it turns out no one really got it…

On the lines of ‘the mobile phone is the next electric guitar’, back in August 2006 I wrote about this for Vodafone Receiver (see here) and in October 2006 presented/demoed the precursor to the 12-track mobile music mixer ‘Intermorphic Mixtikl’ for smartphone / PocketPC PDA at the Symbian Smartphone show (see David Wood, Symbian EVP Research refer to it here).

Tao intent went on to be embedded in many millions of handsets (mainly because of its Java engine), which was great. But sadly the Tao intent SDK (with the advanced intent Sound System) was never freely available to application developers. There was never a freely downloadable intent runtime, either, that might have helped kickstart the intent music app side of things. Many complex chicken and egg business issues there, for sure.

Here we are in 2009, though, and Apple appear to have done it with music apps on the iPhone – their own hardware/software platform. I say well done to them!

Well, Apple have not exactly done it entirely themselves, though. Yes, they put everything in place for it to happen: the iPhone with a great set of hardware and software capabilities, including audio, and deployments in volume; an SDK with audio support that any developer can get hold of and develop with; an easy to use store; lots of marketing etc.

But, there was still still something missing – the apps and games themselves, and this was where the 3rd party developers showed just how important they were (imho) to the iPhone success.

The Telegraph article, at least to my way of thinking, affirms that to me.
